London is full of surprises and hidden gems – Circus is one of these places tucked away in Covent Garden. Behind the steel door, you’ll find yourself in a totally surreal environment featuring a cocktail bar, restaurant, club and a cabaret restaurant in one!
Entertainment is the basis of Circus with a cool concept of short circus acts between courses. The lights are dimmed and kitchen closed to present exciting and funny spectacles – we had a cabaret singer, comedy act and a male acrobat parading on the main ‘Top Table’. The acts were excellent with the best act being the drag-queen singer. We had a perfectly non-obstructed view of the action with a table just next to the main stage.
The interior designed by Tom Dixon is funky – sequined bar with white tables, a main dining area, and a lounge style room for drinking! The cocktail menu is full of the classics with quirky twists – honey mojito, Jamaican mule, orange daiquiri or hibiscus martini. We went for Little Moscow and Tatuahge Noella (rum poured over warm green tea with a chocolate cigar – check out the pics below!
The kitchen, itself is a show, with shutters opening from the dining room showing the team hard at work making Pan Asian dishes. The vegetarian choices of kim chee gyoza, bang trang rolls (pomegranate, pomelo grapefruit, roasted coconut & peanut rolls) and the lychee and aubergine green curry were different to say the least – tasty but not mouth-wateringly spectacular. However, my husband’s red pepper lamb chops cooked in the charcoal oven was very tasty. The last time I came here, there was Cajun style food which I thought was tastier but totally understood why they changed the menu and this new menu is fun.
The staff, who are super friendly and look like they enjoy themselves, looked after us really well with a special shout to our Spanish waiter who made sure we were taken care of at every moment from guiding us to the table, suggesting what to eat and giving us some great insights into Circus.
If you haven’t been to the Circus, get down there for some high wire dining fun…it’s one of London’s most entertaining venues, perfect for taking clients or a fun night out with friends.
